Upcoming HBO series:
Editor's note: We'll update this list with more upcoming HBO series once they are announced.
Tokyo Vice — 2021
Directed by Michael Mann who is best known for its hit TV series Miami Vice, Tokyo Vice is an upcoming crime/drama show that will premier on HBO Max sometime in 2021. It's based on the book written by Jake Adelstein and stars Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe who is known for roles in movies like Batman Begins. The show takes place in the late 90s and revolves around an American journalist who moves to Tokyo and takes on the city's powerful crime bosses. If you're into shows filled with crime and action, Tokyo Vice is for you.
Hellraiser – In development
Clive Barker's 1987 horror film Hellraiser has spawned tons of sequels, along with comic books and other merchandise. Now, HBO wants to expand the franchise into a full-fledged series. Deadline reports that Danny McBride, who has created many HBO comedy series (Eastbound and Down, Vice-Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones), will be one of the executive producers of the show. The pilot, and several episodes, will be directed by David Gordon Green, who directed 2018's Halloween movie reboot.
The original movie introduced horror fans to the Cenobites, a race of S&M-inspired creatures who appear to humans after they solve a puzzle box. Their goal is to harvest human souls. Pinhead, the leader of the Cenobites, instantly became a horror icon. There's no word if this character will reappear in the series.
The Gilded Age — 2021
Julian Fellowes, best known as the creator of the hit UK drama Downton Abbey, is coming to HBO in 2021 with his latest project. It's yet another historical drama, but it's set in the United States this time. Specifically, the show is set in New York City in 1882. A young female orphan goes to live with her very rich aunts in NYC and soon finds herself caught up in the family drama. Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, and Carrie Coon are among the actors who will star in this series.
The Time Traveler's Wife – In Development
Steven Moffat, best known for his role in writing, and later show running, several years of the BBC's sci-fi series Doctor Who, is ready to write some more time travel stories. He's adapting the novel by Audrey Niffenegger, which features a man that can uncontrollably move backward and forward in time. He also falls in love with a woman, and later marries her, even though both people know he will disappear and appear again in different timelines. Game of Thrones actress Rose Leslie will play the title character, and Divergent actor Theo James has been cast as the time traveller.
The Last of Us – In Development
Naughty Dog's two games in The Last of Us franchise have become both critical and sales hits for Sony's Playstation console. HBO is now developing the video game universe into a TV series. The video games mostly take place in the near future, years after a plague has turned infected humans into zombie-like creatures. The series will follow, at least at first, the plot of the first game, as a cynical survivor named Joel is hired to safely escort a young girl, Ellie, through this post-apocalypse United States.

The series is being co-written by Neil Druckmann, who lead the development of both of the games at Naughty Dog. The other co-writer is Craig Mazin, who wrote the acclaimed HBO mini-series Chernobyl. Kantemir Balagov will direct the pilot for The Last of Us. It may be the biggest upcoming HBO series since Game of Thrones, with one possible exception.
House of the Dragon (Game of Thrones spin-off) — likely in 2022
When HBO first announced plans in 2017 to do a spin-off of its most popular show, it seemed like a no-brainer. HBO commissioned a pilot for one untitled spin-off, which was co-created by Game of Thrones's ultimate master — George R.R. Martin. The other co-creator was Jane Goldman, who has written or co-written movies like Kick-Ass, The Woman In Black, and the two Kingsman spy films.
The pilot took place thousands of years before the events of the Game of Thrones show. Naomi Watts was cast as the lead character. This character was described as "a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret." After filming the pilot in 2019, HBO decided to pass on the series.
However, HBO surprised many by announcing plans to go forward with another Game of Throne's spinoff. This one will be called House of the Dragon. Unlike their first spinoff plans, this show will go straight to series. It was co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal. It will take place 300 years before the main series. The series will follow the rise and fall of House Targaryen. Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several episodes of the original series, will direct the pilot and additional episodes.
Filming has just begun, with cast members that include Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon (also known as The Sea Snake), Olivia Cooke as "Alicent Hightower, and Rhys Ifans as "Otto Hightower. It's definitely the biggest of the upcoming HBO series.
Upcoming HBO Series – More Game of Thrones spin-offs possible
In addition to the confirmed House of the Dragon, HBO is still reportedly developing more Game of Thrones spin-offs. Variety claims that the network is working on "Tales of Dunk and Egg." This would be based on a series of three novellas from Martin that take place 90 years before the events of the first novel, "A Song of Ice and Fire." They follow the adventures of two characters: Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg).
Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter claims that HBO Max is developing at least three Game of Thrones animation projects. It's possible that none of these shows will be made, but at least they are in some kind of development.
Admittedly, none of these shows can truly fill the void left behind by the absence of Game of Thrones. However, it's nice to know that there is still plenty of upcoming HBO series to look forward to watching. Is it enough to keep a subscription? That's up to you, but even if you leave, it's easy enough to subscribe to the HBO Max streaming service again later.
